ETSU’s women’s soccer team won against Wofford Oct. 1 on their first conference road win since beating Western Carolina in 2018.

The Buccaneers beat the Wofford Terriers 1-0, with Lindsey Cook (Greenville, Tenn.) taking a penalty kick at 76:03. For the remaining 13 minutes of the game ETSU kept Wofford from scoring, solidifying a win for the Bucs. With the win, ETSU moved to a 1-1-1 in SoCon and a 4-2-3 altogether.

Cook scored for ETSU after missing a penalty kick earlier in the game but came back full force to collect a victory. This became the second ETSU win over Wofford, ETSU having previously beaten the team in 2004.

As women’s soccer coach Jeremy “Jay” Yelton said, “Lindsey Cook, a freshman, scored a fantastic goal to win us the game, and I’m excited for her to after missing a penalty to be brave enough to come back and stay in the game and get a chance for redemption and create the win for us.”

The women’s soccer team currently has two freshmen centerbacks and a freshman goalkeeper. “It’s really neat to see the mindset and the energy of the team and the girls put in a lot of hard work and they’re reaping the rewards of that focus and execution,” said Yelton. This places the foundations for the future success of women’s soccer at ETSU.

Yelton hopes to build a tradition and a team at ETSU to be proud of. “We play passionate and hard, and we don’t give up. Those are the main things I want to be known for,” Yelton said.

The next home game for the team will be against Western Carolina University on Friday, Oct. 8.
