With the arrival of the Spring 2022 semester, the Muslim Student Association is excited to welcome their new executive board, led by president Abdussobur Giwa.

Giwa recognizes that within the last year, word of this organization died down as the association itself had previously been inactive since early 2020. Therefore, many current students are not aware of its existence.

But after a brief hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Muslim Student Association is prepped and eager to re-establish their name on campus.

“The focus of the organization for the spring semester is to revive the Islamic community amongst Muslim students at ETSU,” said Giwa. “We want to create awareness of the association.”

The Muslim Student Association offers a space for Muslim students to share their interest and love for their religion, where they partake in games, meals and various other enjoyable activities. Non-Muslim students intrigued by the religion are also welcome to join.

Throughout the semester, the Muslim Student Association will hold two large lectures discussing Islam – one toward the closing of February and the other during April, which is the month of Ramadan.

The organization is hoping to hold meetings once a month, where they will explore various options to better assist students. Giwa plans for these sessions to take no longer than half an hour each. In the meantime, he and the MSA executive board will work to develop a fully fixed schedule for the semester.

“Regarding the Omicron variant, we will ensure that adequate physical distancing is observed,” said Giwa. “We will also make available Zoom attendance for those who might not want to be physically present.”
