On Thursday, Feb. 3, the Office of Equity and Inclusion will be presenting the feature documentary “I’m Not Racist… Am I?”.  This documentary consists of 12 diverse students sharing their experiences with race and privilege through workshops and various conversations that reflect on their relationships and how they learn to grow together.

The film will be screened in the D.P. Culp Student Center, East Tennessee Room 272, and students can also log on to view via Zoom. The link will be sent to registered attendees only. The event will last from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with 90 minutes of follow-up discussion. Producers of the film, two students from the film and an ETSU team, will be conducting the discussion.

Dr. Adrianna Guram, Associate Director for Residence Life in the ETSU Office of Housing and Residence Life, brought the film forth to honor the message it creates. The Equity and Inclusion Action Group put the event together with the help of both Dr. Guram and Dr. Stacy Cummings-Onks, the Director of the University Advising Center and Learning Support Program.

Both Guram and Onks believe the film could be a catalyst for conversation among students on campus.

“As a campus and as individuals, we have to keep dialoguing, learning and growing. We cannot just wait for another racially charged event to happen to keep this in the forefront of our thoughts and actions. We have to continue the work, both personally and collectively, to end injustice. This is the challenge this event puts forward for our campus.“

There are many sensitive topics that arise but are important to the discussion and story the students share. Onks urges students to come with an open mind.

“We want this event to be welcoming of everyone,. It’s a time to come together and learn.”

The documentary is a licensed film and will only be shown once, so students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.
