After three years of the historic train depot in downtown Johnson City being empty, Peerless Hospitality Concepts announced their plans to open BURG’r & BARREL in the spring of this year.

BURG’r & BARREL will not only be a restaurant, but also a gathering place for people to hang out and enjoy one another’s company, all while enjoying food and drinks.

Gary Kalogeros is the owner of Peerless Hospitality Concepts, and he spoke to the Johnson City Press on the exciting news of opening this new restaurant.

“It’s a historical building that means so much to Johnson City,” said Kalogeros, whose family opened The Peerless Restaurant in Johnson City in the late 1930s. “Johnson City has been around for 150 years, and my family has been in business for over half that amount of time. It just felt like it would be a great fit.”

The train depot that the restaurant will be housed in has rich history here in Johnson City. It was built in 1908 and served as a passenger station and freight depot. The building was actually set to be demolished by a wrecking ball in 2003, but it was quickly saved by Dorian Jones.

The building was then added to the National Register of Historic Places. The building also was home to Tupelo Honey for four years, and it closed in October of 2018.

In a press release, Peerless Hospitality Concepts said its team has been “working since last June in-house on their plans for both the interior and the exceptional exterior outdoor space.” The restaurant will offer many signature dishes, and it will also feature a beer garden that will serve local and regional craft beers.
