Over the last few months, a handful of new restaurants have made their way to downtown Johnson City, and with students’ bank accounts at their highest near the beginning of the semester, now is the perfect time to try them out. It is important to support small businesses in the area, especially in the early months, as their success may trigger more businesses to set up shop in Johnson City.

Spring Street Sandwich Company takes the Subway approach, but elevates it with fresh ingredients and a plethora of house-made sauces and bread. At the moment, the shop closes at 5 p.m., but in a few weeks, they are looking to extend their hours to 1 a.m., providing another late-night option for students who must spend their nights studying.

Voodoo Chicken offers a classic barbecue selection with an Asian twist. The chicken selection ranges from Mild to Oh Holy Ghost (using real ghost peppers!). The variety of sides include hushpuppies, collard greens, kimchi and tempura fried broccolini. This isn’t a place for lunch, however, as the hours range from 5 to 10 p.m., but it’s still a great spot for a casual dinner.

Juan Siao has already become one of the most popular restaurants in town, with a unique Mexican and Asian-infused cuisine. Their menu ranges from portobello tacos to pork belly ramen. Juan Siao is run by the same folks who own Label and Southern Craft, making it their third restaurant in downtown Johnson City. The prices lean more towards the expensive side, so I’d recommend it for special occasions.

All three of these restaurants signify the quickening growth that Johnson City is foreseeing. Each of these establishments conveys itself as upscale and modern. It is a good sign that this city is attracting quality businesses that will help further grow it into a true metropolis.
