As East Tennessee State University’s Homecoming celebrations continue, student organizations are preparing to take the stage for one of the university’s longstanding traditions.
Skit Night is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the D.P. Culp Student Center auditorium. The annual event brings together student organizations for an evening of theatrical performances, dance and friendly competition.
Warden Carter, ETSU’s director of Student Activities and Organizations, described Skit Night as an important part of the university’s Homecoming festivities.
“Skit Night is one of ETSU’s most energetic and anticipated Homecoming traditions, bringing campus organizations together for a high-stakes performing arts competition,” Carter said.
Student organizations, including fraternities, sororities and campus clubs, write, direct and choreograph short performances that combine acting, dancing and singing.
The tradition dates back more than 50 years and was originally established to encourage school spirit and strengthen connections among student organizations.
Carter said the event “originated as a way to boost campus morale, foster friendly competition between student organizations, and give students a creative outlet during Homecoming week.”
Over the years, Skit Night has continued to evolve while remaining part of ETSU’s Homecoming celebrations.
Participating groups spend weeks preparing their performances, which often include themed storylines, coordinated choreography, costumes and elaborate stage designs.
“Expect elaborately designed backdrops, coordinated costumes, massive dance remixes, and clever pop-culture or ETSU-centric jokes,” Carter said. “Groups spend weeks perfecting their acts to win bragging rights and official Homecoming points.”
In addition to competing for Homecoming points, student organizations use the event to showcase their creativity and connect with the campus community.
Carter encouraged students planning to attend to arrive early because seating typically fills quickly.
“Seating fills up incredibly fast for this event,” Carter said. “Bring your energy and be ready to lose your voice cheering for your favorite organizations.”
Skit Night is open to students interested in supporting participating organizations and experiencing one of ETSU’s longstanding Homecoming traditions.
