JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 29, 2023) – ETSU announces Tre Lamb as the new head football coach.

ETSU President Brain Noland and athletic director Doc Sander referred to former Buccaneer head coach Randy Sanders when looking for their new guy. Dr. Noland went on to say, “[we] called our former coach, talked to Coach [Randy] Sanders, and said coach, ‘who would you identify to lead this program?’ And who was the first person on his list? Coach Tre Lamb, number one person on his list.”

Tre Lamb previously served as the head football coach for Gardner-Webb University from 2020-2023. Prior to his time with Gardner-Webb, Lamb worked as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech and Mercer.

When Coach Lamb was brought into Gardner-Webb University as the head coach, he inherited a football program coming off six consecutive losing seasons. Now, Coach Lamb leaves that program after taking Gardner-Webb to back-to-back FCS Playoff appearances and notching the program’s first FCS Playoff win. Before Coach Lamb took over, Gardner-Webb had not seen postseason action since the 1992 NAIA Playoffs.

Back in Lamb’s playing days, he posted a 21-4 record as a starting quarterback for Calhoun (Ga.) HS, where he was named first-team All-State by the Georgia Sportswriters and Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Following his high school career, Lamb played college ball for Tennessee Tech University, where he was a three-year starter and led Tennessee Tech to their first Ohio Valley Conference title since 1975.

Although ETSU is coming off back-to-back 3-8 seasons, Coach Lamb assured Buccaneers fans that “I want to win immediately. This is not a rebuild” when he spoke with media following his introduction as the new head coach.

Lamb also stressed the importance of the ‘first 90 days’ and how critical it is. Stating that “we’ve got to get this thing going as soon as possible because every day wasted is another day that our opponent is getting better… I’m excited to get started. It’s like drinking water through a fire hose.”
