The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is hosting the spring semester recruitment with eight associated fraternities on Monday, Feb. 5.

For two weeks, Feb. 5-16, recruitment will be organized by eight participating fraternities coming from the IFC, one of the three Fraternity & Sorority Life organizations on campus. IFC consists of Alpha Sigma Phi, Beta Upsilon Chi, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

During the recruitment period the IFC fraternities get a chance to show potential new members (PNMs) what fraternity life could be like for them. These two weeks will allow PNMs the opportunity to meet current members, learn about the values, traditions and requirements that each fraternity holds. Each fraternity will be hosting three to four events each throughout the week.

Although typically done by freshmen on campus, IFC President, Dillon Minnix states, “any guy that is interested in leadership opportunities, service opportunities, brotherhood, friendship, it [recruitment] is open to any undergraduate student at ETSU.” Each fraternity has different requirements for membership including academic status and adherence to a code of conduct.

Throughout these two weeks, each fraternity is hosting several events that potential new members can attend, including things such as bonfires, Super Bowl nights, pool nights, game nights, a night at quantum leap, potlucks, flag football and basketball. These events are not only to introduce the potential new members to the fraternities but to also help the fraternities to learn about the PNMs to prepare for when they receive their bids.

“Bid Night” will happen on Friday, Feb. 16. All of the potential new members will will be gathered in the East Tennessee Room in the Culp at 6:30 p.m. While there, fraternities will hand offers to potential new members that they feel would make good members. After offers are given they will move to Rogers-Stout. Potential new members that receive one or more offers will then choose which fraternity they are going to join.

“We [the IFC community] call it ‘running home,’” said Minnix while describing the process where potential new members will utilize Rogers-Stout Hall to run home to the fraternity they have selected. This is typically not done during the spring semester however Logan Napier, vice president of recruitment, has organized this spring recruitment to include it.
