Buccaneer softball returned to the field of play on Saturday, falling to the UNCG Spartans, 9-0. Buccaneer softball has been on the struggle side of things, being on a current six-game skid. The game against the Spartans is the first against SoCon Conference competition. Entering the game, ETSU was a conference worst, 4-15.

The UNCG Spartans on the other hand, stand second in the SoCon at a 17-14 record. Despite the monumental disappointment, this game still stands as a rebuilding learning experience for the softball program.

It was just two seasons ago, when former head coach, Belinda Hendrix was dismissed from the University. Since the departure, interim turned full-time Head Coach, Cheryl Milligan is finally at the helm at her first full season in the commanders chair.

While the game did not go in the way Buccaneers expected it too, there is still strong hope things can become turned around. Players such as sophomore, Kendall Thackston (Greenville, S.C.) alongside junior, Kendal Pitts (Maryville, Tenn.) averages a 13.70 ERA, and a batting average of .273 respectfully.

This loss will only fuel the fire within the softball program. While the Buccaneers will be able to garnish revenge upon the Spartans on Sunday, March 24 in a double-header scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Both games will be played at home in Johnson City at Betty Basler Field.

After the series with the UNCG Spartans concludes, ETSU softball will hit the road against the Winthrop Eagles. The Buccaneers will see action against The Eagles in a double-header, scheduled for March 26 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C.
