ETSU Men’s Golf team entered competition in the Augusta Invitational on Saturday with intentions of capturing the top prize. In a crowded field of talent, ranging from the North Carolina Tarheels to the Texas Longhorns, the SoCon Bucs were able to make a name for themselves in the first day of action.

Set in the gorgeous landscape of Augusta, GA; ETSU’s own redshirt senior, Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway) stole the show. The transfer player from Cal State Northridge would go 71-69 to move near the leaderboard in search for a fifth career victory. Ege would continue to see success, playing his last six holes, going three-under par. The day one performance would set Ege into a tie for fifth place.

The entire field of play, ranging over ten schools in competition, is chasing down top-dog, Illinois’ Jackson Buchanan, who would continue his wining ways on the first day of action. Despite this, the 19 ranked Buccaneers would still manage for a seventh place at 3-over-par 579 in Georgia over on Saturday.

Junior, Algot Kleen (Fiskebackskil, Sweden) is tied for 21 at 1-over-par 145. Meanwhile, sophomore, Matty- Dodd Berry (Wirral, England) would lead the Bucs with 10 birdies. Dodd Berry is tied for 25 at 2-over-par 146. ETSU Men’s Golf currently sits behind that of the Oklahoma Sooners in the fifteen team competition, with the North Carolina Tarheels in first place going into the second day of play this Sunday.

Buccaneers Golf has the potential and the ability to make something out of the trip to Augusta. However, a second day performance on Sunday will be the breaking point. The Bucs will be the first group team out on the green, teeing off at a very early 8:30 a.m. The Bucs will be grouped with The Central Florida Knights and South Florida Bulls to begin play this Sunday.
