On Sept.19, the ETSU Buccaneers played against West Georgia in a nail-biting football game. With ETSU taking lead in the first quarter, the Buccaneers started the game with a new level of confidence. But the teams continued to go back and forth controlling the scoreboard until the final play led to ETSU’s takeover. The game ended in a 35-27 win for the Buccaneers.
There were some strong plays by ETSU’s team, including one by TJ Peyton, who scored a touchdown drive from the 14 yardline. However, what truly sealed their fate was a phenomenal 88-yard touchdown thrown by Mason Mims. This was the win the Bucs needed as this game brings their overall score to a 2-2 this season with equal losses and wins.
“Some extreme positives,” said ETSU coach Will Healy in his postgame news conference. “We found a way to win a game at home … The question is can you win games when you’re not playing great on the offensive side of the ball, and we found a way in the second half to get that done today.”
The difference between the two is clear as we see West Georgia having 80 total plays, 21 first downs, and 411 total yards. Meanwhile, ETSU still managed to take the lead with only 65 total plays, 18 first downs, and 377 total yards. Mims also managed to throw two touchdowns, 198 yards, and 0 interceptions. Wide Receiver, Brandon Winton, gained 96 yards with a 48.0 average and scored one touchdown of his own.
The Buccaneers are fifth in the Southern Conference standings as they have wrapped up non-conference play. If you want to get out and watch these men play in-person come to William B.
