Over the past few weeks, we have covered some darker topics. Today, we’re going to bring some good fortune back into our lives by learning how and why horseshoes are considered lucky.
There are many explanations for why horseshoes are considered lucky, including beliefs that iron repels evil spirits, blacksmiths are associated with good fortune and the horseshoe’s U-shape resembles a crescent moon.
Though it is less common now, horseshoes were traditionally forged from iron. In European folklore, iron was believed to offer protection against evil spirits, leading some people to keep iron objects in their homes to ward off evil.
The association between blacksmiths and luck is also connected to the legend of St. Dunstan. Dunstan was a 10th-century English church leader who later became archbishop of Canterbury. According to legend, Dunstan was also a skilled metalworker and once encountered the devil.
In the story, Dunstan nailed a horseshoe to the devil’s foot, causing him great pain. Dunstan agreed to remove it only after the devil promised never to enter a home with a horseshoe hanging over the door.
The horseshoe’s shape may also contribute to its association with luck. Designed to fit a horse’s hoof, its U-shape resembles a crescent moon, which has been associated with abundance and good fortune in various traditions.
Another explanation involves the number seven. Horseshoes have traditionally been attached to a horse’s hoof with nails, and some folklore connects horseshoes with seven nail holes. Seven has symbolic significance in Christianity and various other religious and cultural traditions, further contributing to the horseshoe’s association with luck.
While there are many explanations for why horseshoes are considered lucky, these traditions have helped establish the horseshoe as a symbol of good luck and protection, particularly when hung in or around the home.
