Dear Editor:
Once again, Republicans are portrayed as war-hungry hate-mongers. Tom Birchfield’s article charging Republicans with having a “Reverse Robin Hood” taxation policy in regards to a future war with Iraq is insulting and far from the truth. I would like to address Birchfield’s assertions, because I have a different story to tell.
First of all, is George Bush our “appointed president?” Please. The last time I heard, it was the Electoral College that decided presidential elections, not the popular vote. I am so tired of hearing Democrats say that the election results were not valid. I’m glad that our country did not get into another constitutional crisis like the one that Al Gore and the liberal-biased media created two years ago. Al Gore lost. Get over it.
Second, Israel. This tiny little country is our only democratic ally in the Middle East. We don’t always have to agree with them, but we must support them. Israelis do not have the right to kill Palestinians over throwing rocks, but Palestinians also need to quit provoking and inciting such incidents (a fact which was, of course, not mentioned). If Israel does not defend itself against suicide bombers and other forms of terrorism, they put their nation in jeopardy, pure and simple.
Third, the heart of the issue: taxes. Evidently Birchfield didn’t read the September 2002 statistics from the Internal Revenue Service’s Statistics of Income Division, which clearly states that the top 50 percent of wage earners pay 96.09 percent of income taxes in this country. There is absolutely no support whatsoever for Birchfield’s farfetched figures and scenarios which, by the way, he provided no legitimate sources for. What is he trying to hide? Those, my friends, are the facts.
I respect the fact that Birchfield desires peace. The very cry of my heart is that there is peace in the world. However, it is the choices of such ruthless and contemptible dictators like Saddam Hussein that make it a constant battle. He is ready, he says, if we attack. Are we ready if he attacks first (and who can’t say he won’t)? Do we want to take that chance? The prospect of another 9-11 at the hands of this madman is enough for me to want him out of power – the sooner the better.
Bush says we will pay any price for freedom and the defeat of terrorists all over the world. When push comes to shove, are we willing to do whatever it takes? I think liberals need to start looking at the world the way it is and not how they wish it would be.
