reDear Editor,
This letter is in reference to Seth Bartee’s article “partisan applause.”
It is the content of the speech and his article where we do not share the same views.
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee decided not to stand because she did not agree with the president about Medicare and defense issues.
Considering that Ebony magazine named Jackson-Lee one of the “100 Most Fascinating Black Women of the Century” and that Congressional Quarterly hailed her as one of the 50 most effective members of Congress, I believe that Jackson-Lee earned the right to disagree with the president and his views.
The Democrats have staunchly opposed President Bush’s tax cuts because they know that they benefit only the richest 1 percent of Americans.
I’m a little confused about the Washington Times saying that the richest 1 percent give more to the Democratic Party than they do to the Republican Party, because it seems to me that since they are the ones getting the most benefit from the tax breaks that they would give more to the Republicans, who give them these breaks.
Bartee says that during the 2000 campaign, Al Gore and his campaign manager Donna Brazile used scare tactics with seniors in Florida.
This is not the case.
They told the seniors that if Bush were elected he would cater to the multimillion-dollar pharmaceutical companies who would raise the cost of their prescriptions.
Bartee also said in his article that Robert Novak, one of the conservative hosts of the CNN show Crossfire, said that Democratic Sen. John Edwards gets most of his support from trial lawyers.
Regardless of where his support comes from, Edwards understands the importance of giving people the right to question their physicians and punishing those accused of wrongdoing.
People should be able to sue over issues of great importance which in turn keep the industry in check.
As for the “responsibility for protecting mankind,” the Democrats did not stand because they believe that the U.S. has a responsibility because we are the most powerful nation in the world. But, we are not the only nation in the world and that the efforts we campaign for around the world we are to do so with the help of other nations.
As for Democratic Congress-woman Nancy Pelosi and her facial expression when President Bush talked about his economic package, my face I’m sure distorted itself as well.
In the two years that this president has been in office we have went from having a surplus budget to a billion-dollar deficit and 1.5 million jobs have been lost.
The chance of me or Rep. Pelosi trusting his economic stimulus plans are slim to none.
