If you were to watch television or read any newspaper, war seems inevitable.
Colin Powell made the U.S.’s case before the United Nations with emphasis on Iraq’s almost decade-long disregard for the agreement made at the end of the Persian Gulf conflict.
The last piece of the puzzle is the United Nations and its security council’s support. It is important for us to realize for the sovereignty of our nation, the United Nations is not needed for the ultimate decision.
The argument is with Iraq, we are not standing up for a defenseless nation like we did with Kuwait or defending ourselves against an immediate threat.
The regime of Iraq has been known to be oppressive to its people. It is also known that Iraq desires the ultimate destruction of our nation and its citizens. Because they possess certain types of weapons, they are an immediate threat to the United States.
The president and his team have been working hard to show that there are real reasons behind the oncoming attack of this Middle Eastern country. The term disarmament has been tossed to and fro since the State of the Union address. The truth is that Iraq has continuously lied about their possession of very destructive chemical weapons. These are weapons that will not be used for border defense, but mass destruction. Iraq has been caught even as recently as December trying to purchase weapons of mass destruction.
I do not think peace without conflict is an option only because Iraq continues to show arrogant disregard concerning removal of their chemical weapon stockpiles. The fact that weapons inspectors are still inspecting is an example of patience shown by the current administration.
If there is another way besides war, it looks like Bush is trying to find it.
The arguments about the United States chasing oil are interesting, but lacking in content. If we had wanted the oil we could have diplomatically threatened an embargo for lower prices. The insinuation that President Bush is trying to avenge his father’s mistake of not killing Saddam when he had the chance is absurd.
Is it really difficult to accept that our government is actually trying to use the military for its purpose, which is to defend our nation against possible threats?
Iraq has left us no choice but to enforce the original agreement from the Gulf War and to protect the world from destruction at the hands of modern day tyrannical dictator.
