The Center for Appalachian Studies and Services is taking applications for its annual trip to Scotland and Ireland.
“Students who take the course in Scotland, Ireland will learn about those cultures and how the cultures of those nations have influenced Appalachian culture,” said Ted Olson, director of Appalachian Scottish and Irish Studies. “Specifically, students will study narratives (storytelling and balladry), folk music, customs and material culture.”
The group will spend 10 days in Edinburgh, the Fife, the Highlands and the Borders Region and will visit places of interest then spend 10 more days traveling through Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Those interested can still register this week. “We need a $100 registration fee by Feb. 15 and a $500 trip deposit by April 1, 2003,” said Darla Dye, trip coordinator. “The trip cost is $3,000 for credit students, who will need to register for either three or six undergraduate or graduate hours or $3,500 for non-credit students.
“This cost reflects all programs, accommodations, flights, travel within Scotland and Ireland and site visits for three weeks from July 12 to Aug. 3,” Dye said.
