The ETSU Office of Housing and Residential Life is accepting applications for residential advisors, RAs, positions for fall 2003 until Feb. 21.
Many qualifications are required, and certain personality traits are a must. A group interview, as well as an individual interview, is also part of the application process.
An RA has several duties. They must be administrators and enforce rules, keep residence halls safe and maintained. They also must be counselors and educators when residents need assistance.
“RAs must attend extensive training, help with academics, enforce rules, help students establish relationships with other residents, keep residents informed and keep order in an emergency,” said Renee Couch, assistant director of housing and residence life.
Couch said all applicants must be enrolled at ETSU and have at least a 2.3 GPA. The applicant must demonstrate success outside of the classroom activities. Also, the applicant must have an outstanding character, which will be determined by a criminal background check.
“I think that this can be a rewarding position for anyone who gets the job,” said Tom Peterson, 2003 applicant. “This can be a good way to get to know more people, plus the private room for half price is a good deal.”
Applicants need good communication skills in order to deal with a wide variety of situations, which range from helping a student find tutoring to disciplinary action.
RAs have to relate well with peers, make mature decisions and have a genuine interest in people and the residence hall. The ability to accept criticism is also necessary.
A group interview is included in the application process. Applicants are randomly assigned to small groups and are observed on how well they come to a solution and communicate in what to do in a hypothetical problem they solve.
Compensation for RAs include a private room at semi-private rates and a stipend of $250 a month, which can be used toward the remaining expense of the room.
