What are the roles of husbands and wives according to the Bible? Is sexuality even addressed in a positive light scripturally?
As a single person, what should I pursue in a relationship to promote a respectful and successful environment?
These questions and more were addressed and answered at Freedom Hall during a two-day conference on Feb. 14 and 15.
Tommy Nelson, prominent speaker and author, addressed these questions at “The Song of Solomon Confer-ence.”
Topics covered during the conference included: attraction and dating, courtship, intimacy, conflict, romance and commitment.
Using the book of the Bible Song of Solomon as a guide, Nelson methodically explicated each section of the text to provide insights into what he considered to be God’s plan for successful male/female relationships.
Nelson’s objective in this in-depth study of Song of Solomon was to provide insight into God’s view of sexuality.
It is often said that the Bible only gives guidelines on what not to do sexually — never on what should be done. According to Nelson this is just the opposite of the truth.
“Do you really think that God would give His beloved creations, man and woman, the wonderful feeling we call romance, an institution as mysterious as marriage and the marvelous passion we know in sexual intimacy and then not have anything to say about these gifts to us?” Nelson said.
“Do you think God would allow men and women to marry and then toss them a grenade called intimacy and say to them, ‘Well, just fiddle around a little with this and you’ll figure out how to work it?'”
Nelson uses the text of the elusive Song of Solomon as a step-by-step guide to the evolution of a couple’s relationship. It begins with the initial physical attraction between the couple and progresses to their first sexual encounter after marriage and culminates in their commitment and dedication to preserving romance in their relationship.
Whether you follow Christian ideologies or not, this conference provides useful insights into the dynamics of relationships between men and women.
