Subjects as diverse as Jesus, catfish and wines to self-hypnosis, Islam and the Amazon are among topics selected for spring classes in the Institute for Continued Learning (ICL), ETSU’s learning-in-retirement organization, which begins Tuesday, March 11.
The ICL is open to any interested person and is “member-powered, member-driven and member-governed.”
There are no educational prerequisites, examinations or grades.
Participants decide what study groups, forums, classes and other activities will be held and are responsible for finding leaders for the sessions and selecting officers.
Topics on the spring schedule include the history of Johnson City, music, films and discussions, “Self-Organization,” “Health Enhanced by Art Learning,” “The Historical Jesus,” “Juke Joints, Cotton Fields and Catfish Ponds: A Culinary and Cultural Tour of the Mississippi Delta,” “Pocket Guide for the Enjoyment of Wine in Social and Business Surroundings,” “Islam and Current Affairs,” “Self-Hypnosis: A Means for Achieving a Variety of Ends,” “The Amazon: Above and Below the Surface,” “19th century Women Physicians in America and Great Britain,” “Watersheds and TVA,” and many others.
Instructors for spring sessions include a variety of ETSU faculty and staff, area religious leaders, fitness instructors, business people, media professionals, musicians and others.
The full program membership for the 2003 spring semester is $25, which entitles members to attend any or all sessions offered by the ICL.
An additional $10 fee will be required of members who participate in an all-day trip to the Asheville Art Museum on Tuesday, April 8.
The ICL kicks off March 11 with an informal “Get Acquainted Coffee” from 9-10 a.m. in the Carnegie Library, Bldg. 17 on the campus of the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home.
Classes will be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the Carnegie Library, and parking is available in Lot 178 behind Johnson City Medical Center on Med Center Drive North; participants may make arrangements to carpool from this lot with other ICL members.
