Dear Editor,
I find it very interesting the similarities between the country’s attitudes toward the War on Terrorism and World War I.
One resemblance that I find to be fascinating is that during both wars, Americans changed the name of certain foods to show their disgust with certain countries.
During WWI, Americans renamed German toast to French toast and sauerkraut to liberty cabbage, in protest of Germany.
In the fight against terrorism, Americans have begun calling French fries “liberty fries” due to France being unsupportive of Americans plans to go to war with Iraq. Fox News journalist Bill O’Reilly also suggested that Americans boycott French wine.
Another similarity is the negative views generated by each war.
During WWI, German-Americans were mistreated and believed to be disloyal, and this drove some to change their last names to American names.
The war on terrorism has caused Muslims to be mistreated and mislabeled. In some places, they banned Muslim women from covering their faces, which is part of their religion. I find it humorous the way history has repeated itself in these cases.
