What is it with the Democratic Party? With the election barely over discussion immediately began on eyeing the prize of the ’08 race, and the ideas I heard were worse than the ones for 2000 and this year’s run for the presidency.
Look, I can be a nice guy. I know that most of you Dems only see me as the big political guru who should be held in awe for his wisdom, and that most of you are afraid to approach me for advice the same as you avoid the shadow of Rush Limbaugh, the crass honesty of Michael Savage and the All-American Sean Hannity.
But you need not fear. I am willing to extend to you the answer for winning the presidency in ’08. No sarcasm. No pulling your chain; just honest answers for your never ending dilemma.
First, forget Hillary. You guys just don’t get it. I said it with Kerry, and you didn’t listen. You could have taken ’04 with Lieberman, but you said that you couldn’t stand the guy. Who cares?
There are times to go with your base, and then there are times when you have to alienate the base in order to win.
You guys don’t get it.
Listen. The Dems don’t have enough far lefties, gays, minorities, poor folks or any other part of the base – in part or in whole – to take an election.
That means that you are going to have to appeal to the conservatives in this country to get a clear majority, period. You had the chance in ’04 and blew it! You need to do the math.
If you had picked Lieberman, the odds of any of the base being so angry that votes would have swung over to G.W. would have been nil.
Lieberman would have won the votes of the disenfranchised Republicans who wanted someone who had a moral stance and clear stand against terrorism but who could have done better in executing the war on terror while miraculously reviving the economy.
Do you get the hard core Dem vote? Yes. Do you get undecided voters? Enough of them, to say the least. Do you get Republicans to vote for him? Yes.
But you guys just had to pick Flip Flop and his geek running mate because they embodied the ideals that the minority in the country wanted, and that might make him popular, but the idea in an election is to get the majority of the country’s vote.
Mark my words, if you pick Hillary in 2008 you are going to lose and lose big! There are not enough people in this country who would identify with her lib left ideology to get the majority vote. Is her gender an issue? Maybe. I’d vote for a woman, but not her.
If picking Kerry was shooting yourself in the foot, then picking Hillary is turning the gun to your head and pulling the trigger.
Next week, in part two we’ll discuss “rebuilding the Democratic party.
