This weekend, The Casbah will play host to a concert that will feature five rock bands, and four are from the local area.
On Saturday, The Casbah will host a grand opening concert for the new fashion store, Bettye Jane’s Fashion Exchange.
The five bands playing are Commerce, Jet Jaguar, In Remembrance of Me, Winter of ’74 and ScullSoup.
Commerce is one of four local bands that will be performing. Commerce is an indie rock band that hails from Johnson City.
The band was founded in late 2003, and, after only one week of practice, they began to work on their first EP. Described as an “emotional voyage of happiness,” Commerce’s first EP, Means Never Having to Say You’re Sorry has tales of failures through song as is the case with their song “Don’t Say This is My Future” and “Help and Drama.” Commerce is a soft, harmonious band that can develop into something great.
Also hailing from Johnson City, In Remembrance of Me combines the music rock genres of hardcore and space rock.
Fused together, In Remembrance of Me brings a different sound to the table than most bands. With tracks like, “Scream! Unclean,” “Cure for a Bleeding Heart” and “The Grace Period,” In Remembrance of Me gives its listeners an aura of something diverse, while the vocals range from calm and collective to loud, vengeful and powerful.
Playing third in the show is a band most ETSU students will remember from October’s Homecoming. Winter of ’74, the third band from Johnson City, brings strong emotion to the stage.
“My Room” and “All That You’ve Got” are just some of the songs that show the talent of Winter of ’74. What they also bring to the stage is a groovy sound followed by a commanding voice from the lead singer, Drew.
This is sort of a farewell night for Winter of ’74 as they will be losing a drummer. Tim Smith is leaving the band to start a buy/sell/trade fashion store with partner Victor Newman.
The concert is for their store, and there are also plans to give out discount coupons to those who attend the show.
According to GoTriCities.com, Jet Jaguar is “Johnson City’s new rockabilly superstar.”
Jet Jaguar brings an in-your-face attitude.
Their beats are fast, they play as quick as a punk band, and they do it all while keeping you entertained. Jet Jaguar, with its funky title and smash-face music, is sure to set the stage on fire.
Headlining Saturday’s concert is the band that is a mixture of ska, hardcore, punk and according to their web site “whole lot of ‘What the hell was that?'” I’m talking about ScullSoup.
ScullSoup originates from Greeneville. They are described as being a band that is not labeled as playing a specific genre. Unpredictable and energetic, ScullSoup is sure to finish the night on a high note.
There is a all-ages show scheduled that will begin at 6:05 p.m. with Winter of ’74 taking the stage. The show will end at 8 p.m. with In Remembrance of Me.
ScullSoup and Jet Jaguar will not be performing at the all-ages show. The over-18 show begins with Commerce at 9:40 p.m. ScullSoup will take stage at 1 a.m. and will rock on until the end.
Ticket prices are $2 for ages over 21 and $3 for those under.
