Freshman Nathan Strickland leapt to victory Saturday, placing first in the long jump and beating his lifetime record with a distance of 6.75 meters. Strickland then placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 13.04 m.
Shane Estes, a freshman from Maryville, also pulled strong for ETSU, placing third in the high jump at 1.93 meters.
“He did well,” said Jason Farr, assistant jump coach. “He tied a personal best.”
Sophomore Johnny Tucker beat his lifetime best in the 60-meter dash prelim with a time of 6.94 and went on to place second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.10 seconds.
“We’re doing OK” coach David Walker said. “We’ve got a lot of injuries to our best kids.”
Peter Dalton, one of ETSU’s best distance runners did not participate in Saturday’s meet.
“He hurt his Achilles … and he worked through it,” Walker said. “But as a result he’s got a stiff calf, and we can’t seem to get rid of that.”
Chantelle Vernon and Jenny Knox both represented ETSU in the 60-meter dash. Vernon placed second with 7.64 seconds and Knox placed fifth with 7.85 seconds.
Senior Nichola Cornish placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.00 seconds while junior Christina Ward placed third in the 3,000-meter run.
Maggie Hunter also succeeded in her distance events by placing fifth in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:50:37. this was a seasonal best for her.
The Bucs will represent ETSU next at Appalachian State on Feb. 10. Then they travel to Columbia, S.C., to participate in a two-day meet hosted by Clemson University on Feb. 11 and 12.
