A stretcher was seen coming out of Memorial Center after ETSU’s stunning loss to Appalachian State Wednesday.
It symbollically could have represented ETSU’s whole season as the Mountaineers rolled to a thunderous 95-73 win.
“We never expected this kind of game,” said Travis Strong who scored an ETSU high 21 points. “The game got out of control, we stopped making defensive plays.”
The Mountaineers shot 53 percent from the floor while the Bucs (6-16, 2-10) could barely break 40 percent for the game.
Tim Smith, in an unusual performance, scored four points and went 2-of-17 in field goals.
ETSU’s losing streak is now at seven straight games while ASU (6-5, 12-9) have won their last three road games and are tied for the lead in the North Division.
Elon 79, ETSU 67
ETSU went into Monday night’s matchup at Elon mired in a five-game losing streak and desperately hoping that another game against the Phoenix would rekindle the magic of Jan. 15.
The Bucs instead found more second-half frustration as they battled back to tie the game at 67 with under three minutes left only to watch Elon pull out an 80-72 victory.
This was nothing new to the Bucs, who have been plagued by close losses all season.
The first half started off promising for ETSU. The Bucs pulled ahead 25-20 and finished the first half down only 36-34 on the strength of 51.7 percent shooting from the floor while holding Elon to 40 percent from the field.
ETSU stayed close during the second half, falling behind twice before roaring back to tie the game up.
Le’Vonn Jordan led the way for Elon, scoring 20 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. With neither team having much of an advantage in the key statistics.
