On April 6 the ETSU Counseling Center will hold the sixth annual Well-A-Palooza carnival on the pedestrian mall.
“The purpose is to give students an opportunity to learn about healthy choices,” said Kim Bushore-Maki, the coordinator of outreach programs in the Counseling Center.
The carnival will have a respiratory check, blood pressure check and HIV tests.
“The other big thing that this event is National Alcohol Screening Day,” says Bushore-Maki.
The Counseling Center will have a booth set up where students can come by and take a very brief, five-minute questionnaire and sit down with a counselor who will go over the results with them.
The purpose of the questionnaire is to give students feedback about the choices they make in regards to alcohol. “It is confidential, we do not report to anyone about those results.”
To help the festivity of the carnival there will be giant inflatables, a gyroscope and a DJ, all provided by Funville.
There will also be door prizes given out throughout the day. Students can also get a passport, which after visiting certain booths or screens, will get them a free T-shirt.
“The Counseling Center is offering another incentive for folks to participate in the alcohol screen,” Bushore-Maki said. “The fraternity, sorority, athletic team and the residence hall who have the most people participate in the alcohol screen will win the prize.”
The prize will depend on what each group needs at the time. Last year’s winner, a residence hall, won a microwave.
“The main thing is we just want to help students make healthy choices, and there’s obviously going to be plenty of opportunity for them to learn about that,” Bushore-Maki said.
Well-A-Palooza is sponsored by the Counseling Center, the College of Public and Allied Health, the Student Health Clinic and SGA 606 funds.
The carnival will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The carnival will be moved to the Culp Center if it is raining.
