Dear Editor,
This is in response to Hollie Hill’s letter concerning same-sex marriage. I would like to first start out saying that a civil union does, in fact, remove the sanctity of marriage. Marriage was originally created as a sacred vow between a man and a woman. And, yes, this is according to the Holy Bible in which most Americans believe. According to Leviticus 18:22, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.”
I believe this to be God’s attitude toward homosexuality. Furthermore, the issue is not whether or not God hates marriages of people who are not Christian. The issue is whether or not God hates same-sex marriage.
I also notice you argue that there has been no “demise of morality” in our culture over the past 40 years. Although there are still “moral” individuals in today’s society, I would like to point out that there has been an evident decline in the mortality of our nation.
Now, I am not attempting to “play” God and judge the moral status of our nation as a whole. However, I can not help but notice the increasing rate of divorce, drug abuse, violence, pornography, abortion and homosexuality within American society.
I also think it absurd for you to question whether or not “God frowns upon unions that don’t produce offspring.” There are numerous heterosexual couples in today’s society that do not produce offspring. I do not believe producing offspring is required to please God.
This country was founded upon Christian beliefs. God is referred to repeatedly on our nation’s money, in our nation’s courthouses and in our Pledge of Allegiance. By the way, the sanctity of marriage is threatened by same-sex marriages. You say that Mr. Blessing’s argument was based upon his “own religious point of view.” However, I believe your argument is based upon nothing more than your point of view, as is mine.
