I’ve got it bad, and it’s getting worse.
Springtime is a bad time for sickness. Allergies are raging and sinuses are exploding. But my illness is in my head.
It all started a couple of weeks ago. I was walking my dog after work. All was well in the world. The sun was shining, warming the air to an all-too-comfortable 70-something degrees.
All of a sudden it hit me.
I got a fever – and the only prescription was more springtime.
I couldn’t go in my house without feeling nauseated. I had to be outside just to feel normal. So I simply couldn’t go to my night class.
I became infected with a hybrid Spring Fever/Senioritis bug. And watch out: It’s spreading fast.
Symptoms include strong hesitancy toward going to class, the need to play outside, and developing the mantra, “There’s only four more weeks. There’s only four more weeks.”
And there is no cure. The sickness lingers in your body, dormant for months until the trees start leafing and flowers bloom.
The students who have this sickness are easy to find. Just look for people sitting by the window with a glazed stare into nothing. But don’t bother avoiding us. You’ll get it, too.
And teachers, don’t think you’re safe. I’ve noticed how lectures drift off and classes let out a few minutes earlier. You’ve got it, too.
While there is no cure, the mantra helps. Just remember: There’s only four more weeks. Four weeks.
Then it’s summertime, and the living’s easy.
