East Tennessee State University students are still supporting Chef Rick Tabor, even after he’s left the campus.
Picasso’s Restaurant, Chef Rick’s new venture, had its grand opening Friday and was used as a test run for the new staff. It officially opened to the public on Tuesday with eager reception.
With at least 60 students and faculty present to test the new menu, Picasso’s was bustling.
“I am excited and pleased Picasso’s is now open to the public,” said Chef Rick. “It’s going to be a good way to revitalize the downtown area while giving students a great environment.”
Chef Rick left Aramark Campus Dining Services earlier this year after a disagreement with District Manager Brian Ellis.
He says he misses the students and the school, but hopes his new restaurant will bring the students to him.
Incorporating his mantra of “good food, great environment and good fun,” Chef Rick said he has tried to make Picasso’s a safe and fun place to come.
“It’s a strictly laid back atmosphere,” he said. “There’s no frisking at the door; it’s not going to be that type of place.”
The wait staff, mostly made up of ETSU graduate students, are trained to vigorously greet you at the door.
“They are a clean-cut crew with no tattoos and piercings,” he said. “I didn’t want a rough crowd – I just want everyone to have a good time.”
A bit upscale, Picasso’s has over $20,000 worth of art in its bathroom alone.
The bartenders wear tuxedos as they serve drinks and valet parking is available every Friday and Saturday. Live bands play Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
“We have a large patio that seats 120 people and stay open late Fridays and Saturdays, so it’s going to be a good place to come after hours.”
The menu has a wide variety of foods, including everything from sandwiches to steaks, and also serves desserts.
Already becoming a popular place to hold banquets, Picasso’s has hosted 40 so far (many of them being ETSU-related) and has 35 more lined up; over half are also for ETSU.
ETSU may not have heard the last of Chef Rick.
When Aramark’s contract runs out, he and his investors will put in a proposal on the property.
“I just want all of the students to know I love them and miss them,” said Chef Rick.
“I hope they’ll come see me and I am really excited that I have their support.
