Dear Editor,
A letter in the East Tennessean for April 24 suggests that your newspaper is anti-Christian. I haven’t found it so.
Let’s consider the points raised by the letter writer.
Are only “atheists upset because … their kids have to hear the words “Under God” being said during the pledge of allegiance?” The Bible also instructs Christians not to swear by anything on this earth or in the heavens above.
Is it a “scientific reality that there is more evidence for intelligent design than there is for evolution?” Not according to scientists. To give just one example, in September of 2005, “38 Nobel Prize laureates asked state educators to reject proposed science standards that treat evolution as a seriously questionable theory, calling it instead the ‘indispensable’ foundation of biology.” The courts agreed.
So, the question is, who is best able to judge scientific evidence, scientists on the one hand or religious figures and politicians on the other.
Is this “an abuse of the right of the press” because the people have a “right to accurate information.” Keep in mind, please, that the articles this reader found objectionable were all clearly labeled “Viewpoint.”
Everyone is in favor of free speech they agree with. It is harder to tolerate free speech that you do not agree with, but that is the American way.
