Newly elected SGA president, Josh Shearin has also earned a spot as an officer for the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature.
Shearin is a technology senior, majoring in digital media. He is also a member of the ETSU Student Leader Hall of Fame.
Josh Clarke, a sophomore at Union University, is the new governor of TISL and the next TISL General Assembly has been scheduled for Nov. 9-12 at the State Capitol.
Clarke and a new TISL Executive Council were elected by a convention of college students from across the state on Jan. 28 in Nashville, Tenn.
Other officers will be:
Lieutenant Governor Kristy Carmack of Lambuth University. Speaker of the House Chelsie Hardin of Trevecca Nazarene University. Attorney General Nic Perry of Chattanooga State Technical Community College.
The Doubletree Hotel, which is one block from the Capitol and Legislative Plaza, will be the official hotel for the General Assembly.
The convention voted not to fill the positions of speaker pro tem of the Senate and speaker pro tem of the House of Representatives until the General Assembly convenes in November. Governor Clarke will appoint a Treasurer soon.
Clarke and the new TISL Executive Council will be rebuilding TISL after two years of dormancy.
“I think that there were many great ideas that were brought up at the convention that can be used to make this year’s General Assembly better than ever,” Clarke said after his election.
TISL is a statewide organization formed in 1966 to give college students a voice in state government. The nonpartisan organization convenes a General Assembly each year in the State Capitol for students to introduce, debate and vote on legislation about state issues.
The organization has been on the leading edge of numerous issues over the years, including child safety seats, living wills and highway safety.
Shearin is no stranger to campus leadership. He has served in the capacity of vice president, attorney general and senator of SGA.
He is also a member of the Alumni Association board of directors, the honor societies of Alpha Lambda Delta, Epsilon Pi Tau and Omicron Delta Kappa and secretary of Kappa Sigma, a social fraternity.
Most recently Shearin was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Univeristies and Colleges.
Since TISL’s inception, nearly every college and university in Tennessee has been a member at various times. Clarke and the Executive Council said achieving broad participation is a major goal in 2006.
