ETSU’s Volleyball team is anchored by four seniors. The senior class provides experience and leadership and has head coach Lindsey Devine optimistic about this season. “Last year we thought we could win, this year we know we can,” said Devine at media day in Brooks Gym Wednesday.
The Atlantic Sun coaches’ poll has picked the Bucs fifth in the conference but that is not the team’s goal.
Jennifer Sartor came to ETSU four years ago as Devine was taking over as head coach. Sartor says this team is more connected than in years past. “I feel really confident this year . it is time to dominate,” she said. Senior Sarah Buhr agrees, “This team is hungry to win,” she said. Buhr said the team goal is, “to win an A-Sun championship.”
“The four seniors want to walk away from their college experience with a lasting footprint here at ETSU,” Devine said.
The momentum from last season’s record setting campaign has spilled over into the preparation for this year. Senior Jennifer Emerson said it didn’t take long for players to get into Devine’s system this summer. “We came in this summer in much better shape,” she said. Emerson said being fit in the pre-season allowed the team to make early improvements on the court.
Crystal Palmer rounds out the senior class, but they are not alone. Callie Kiselich and Michelle Mislan are starting their third season with ETSU’s volleyball team. “They are part of that successful group who have made a difference,” said Devine.
The Bucs will have two new assistants helping Devine this year. Tammi Batson is assistant coach and Rachel Cooper comes to ETSU as a graduate assistant. “Rachel and Tammi are motivated and excited. The entire coaching staff is more united and doing everything we can to make this a successful year,’ Devine added.
After two tournaments in North Carolina the Volleyball Bucs will host a tournament here in Johnson City. The home tournament is set for Sept. 8 and 9.
