Dear Editor:
I am writing in response to the article “Stepford Sisters.” First off, I was unaware that it was the place of this newspaper to insult members of the student body.
Secondly, I’m appalled that an article so dependent on stereotypes and prejudices saw print.Did the paper have nothing else to run that you felt the need to put this in to fill up blank space?
Furthermore, it is obvious that Mr. Seiber did not bother to talk to any of these ladies. After all, it is so much easier to spread around prejudices when one never bothers to find out the truth.
If he had bothered to ask these girls questions, he may have found out some answers to why these girls had gone through recruitment, why they were in a sorority and what a sorority means to them.
He would also discover that, miracles of miracles, not all sorority women are carbon copies of each other, in fact I can’t think of any that are.
Don’t believe me? Well I chalk that up to the fact that I actually know these girls, both in my own chapter and in other chapters.
Do I know sisters who look like other sisters? Of course. But I also know a lot of other girls on campus who are not involved in sororities that look like my sisters so that is no big deal.
Maybe, in Mr. Seiber’s defense, hebelieves that if one is blonde or brunette, then they must look like all other blondes or brunettes.
No, if he actually bothers to talk to a sorority woman he will discover a lot about them, but then again, you couldn’t have this delightful article if you actually cared about the actual situation on campus.
To answer Mr. Seiber’s questions, yes, you are bashing on fraternities and sororities so please don’t insult my intelligence by claiming otherwise.
Yes, you are a bad person for stereotyping an entire group, especially when you spread your faulty stereotypes around and NEVER bother to seek the truth by even talking to the women you insult.
Yes, your idea of sororities is flawed, and just because you came in with a faulty assumption does not mean that every woman in a sorority came in with a faulty assumption of her own.
There were other things about this article that deserve comment, but I am sure there is a space limit to these letters so I just encourage anyone who thinks this article is true to please get to know people before you put them down.
