Dear Editor,
As I was browsing through the latest edition of the school paper, I came upon the story about the Well.
I have to say that I am truly appalled at what was written. I go to the Well regularly and have been since I first began my schooling here at ETSU. I find the Well to be uplifting and a wonderful place to worship God.
The way the Well is portrayed in the article is not what the Well really is. Yes, there may be some people who go to the Well just to ‘hook up,’ but some people go for the spiritual feeling they receive from the Well.
Yes, fellowship, or socializing as your writer calls it, is encouraged at the Well, but when it gets down to time, there is a lot of worshipping. People who have never been to the Well are going to get the wrong image.
My roommate, for example, has never been and upon reading, she said that it gave her the mindset not to go to the Well.
This is not the way that the Well should be portrayed or how anything should be portrayed to those who have not experienced it before.
If the writer of the article had been to the Well recently, he would find that Johnny Zero is part of a series of sermons that informs people to try to be a part of the bigger picture. This Wednesday night at the Well, the sermon was on how children of Christ were to be a part of His story and not their own story.
Johnny Zero is a gimmick to get people interested in the Well. The Well staff has no hidden agenda by sending out this new campaign. I think that the East Tennessean has really wronged the Well and given it a bad reputation now.
People are going to read this article and think that hooking up and socializing is what the Well is all about, and that really isn’t so.
As I stated before, there may be people who do that at the Well, but I have never been around them. For me, the Well has been a blessing to my life and I am glad I have found somewhere that I can worship freely.
Thank you for letting me voice my opinion.
Sincerly,
Katie Hubbard
