Dear Editor,
Recent speaker David Horowitz is absolutely right in saying that American universities promulgate liberal ideals. He is absolutely wrong, however, in suggesting that this is a secret.
On the contrary, our liberal ideals are proudly put forth in our mission statement, “The university makes educational opportunities available to all eligible people, without regard to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.”
In short, we uphold the liberal ideals of freedom and equality on which our country was founded.
When you read what Horowitz says, however, it is clear that liberal ideals are not what he objects to.
His small, threadbare stock of examples of ‘bad’ behavior by college professors is about professors who criticize politicians. His idea of ‘freedom’ is that politicians should be free from criticism.
He wants laws to require universities to hire professors who keep silent about what our politicians in Washington are doing, unless that is specifically a part of the course syllabus.
If politicians want to be free from criticism, instead of trying to silence their critics, they should mend their behavior.
