On Oct. 28 and Nov. 18, the Communication in Organizations class (CIO) at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) will host open workouts and Swing-Off Competitions at The Edge Performance Center in Johnson City. CIO and its advisor, Dr. Patti Cutspec, have made significant strides in the last month to raise $9,288 for Radio Al-Mahaba, the first women’s radio station in Iraq. Located in Baghdad, Iraq, the station’s transmitter was bombed by a car bomb, and students in CIO are trying to raise money and awareness to fund a new transmitter for the station.
CIO Solutions has existed for years; however, this project was created by students enrolled in the fall 2006 semester of the Communication in Organizations class. Its members have joined efforts with the Satellite Sisters, an ABC affiliate, to raise money for Radio-Al-Mahaba. In addition to the Swing-Off competition and Open Workout, CIO members will serve refreshments, and conduct a silent auction to benefit Radio Al-Mahaba.
Items for auction will include sports memorabilia, jewelry, restaurant gift certificates and gift baskets from local retailers. A $5 minimum donation will be collected at the door.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. for the Open Workout. The Swing-Off Competition will start at 8 p.m.
This event is open to adults, students and children. The Edge Performance Center is located at 2615 South Roan St., Johnson City. It is located off South Roan Street, in the same complex as the Cherokee United Methodist Church.
