Dear Editor,
In the Oct. 23 edition, there was an article stating that all that Homecoming King and Queen candidates do is pass out candy in hopes of getting votes.
Also, Akens made a point that at her community college she ran for queen and had to write an essay, which enabled her to become runner-up for queen. Someone didn’t do her research on this story. Here at ETSU, the candidates for king and queen are elected based on 50 percent votes, 20 percent community and school involvement and 30 percent essay about their most significant moment here at ETSU.
Homecoming King and Queen may be an event that some people find trivial, but do not take away the hard work that these candidates did to earn their titles.
All the candidates running in the election are students that are involved in the school and community. The student body should support the work that these candidates do and not put them down by trivializing this event.
The support of the student body and the university is what makes ETSU Homecoming, and events like King and Queen so special, not a crown put on someone’s head.
So instead of making judgments and putting Homecoming down, we should come together as a student body and support this event that is meant to promote school spirit and unity.
Sincerely,
Jordan Parlett
