As the National Championship looms large upon the landscape of sports we are once again slapped in the face by the idiocy that is the Bowl Championship Series.
The Buncha Crap Series as I affectionately call it has once again managed to take opportunity out of the hands of the players who deserve it and place it in the hands of coaches, writers and computers who don’t even watch all the games.
It’s not like the BCS hasn’t had time to get it right. Four out of the last seven years the BCS has ruined the national championship title game. In two of those four years the BCS gave us split national champions, which the BCS was designed to prevent. What a system.
What is so wrong about integrating a miniature playoff system? Football at every level besides Division I-A has a playoff of some way, shape or form. Why not Division I? I find it hard to believe that the money-grubbing NCAA can turn down the opportunity to make money hand over fist in a playoff.
The argument against a playoff is as old and tired as the commissioners of these conferences that it spews from.
The first phrase that flies out is “What about the student athlete?” What about the student athlete? They already play a 12-game schedule anyway. Why not just cut back the season two games and use the last two or three weeks as a playoff.
The next argument is “What about tradition?” What about tradition? The game of college football has continually evolved. Today’s game is not the same game that was made famous by Red Grange and the “Four Horsemen.”
Before someone screams out what about the bowls, let me finish. I realize that the bowls have been a part of college football for almost 90 years.
Imagine using the four major bowls as playoff rounds. The winners of these games could play for National Championship and then we can take football out of the clutches of gymnastics and swimming as the only other sports decided by judges.
For the record, no, I’m not some whining Michigan fan. Oh, and for all you Buckeyes out there, if you’re not a gator then you’re gator bait. GO GATORS!
