East Tennessee State University’s Interfraternity Council has officially completed their food drive of fall 2006.
Representatives from the seven Interfraternity Council Greek chapters traveled to Gray carrying over 2,000 pounds of donated food to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee.
The IFC has also made a monetary donation of $2,686 to Second Harvest, bringing the total amount of money donated toward the Greek Food Drive $3,295 (Lambda Chi Alpha has a pre-existing arrangement with Good Samaritan Ministries).
Second Harvest’s ability to purchase food lower than wholesale pricing at about 5 cents a pound allows the non-profit to buy an estimated 53,720 pounds of food, in addition to the 2,285 pounds already donated, bringing the total to an estimated 56,005 pounds of food.
The consensus of all fraternity chapters involved was that the amount of food should have been higher.
However, an important goal was realized for the IFC as a whole was realized through this food drive: All seven fraternity chapters came together and worked as one unit.
There have been problems and obstacles within the fraternity system this past semester and the IFC’s decision to step back and re-evaluate where the fraternity system is as a whole has led to projects such as the Greek Food Drive.
Working together as an IFC instead of seven chapters competing on projects like this has managed to find a sense of unity among the university’s Greek system.
