The baseball team was coming off a four-game winning streak and looking to extend it to five. Lipscomb had other ideas as they defeated the Bucs 10-3 Friday night. ETSU is now 10-3 in conference play and 24-13 overall.
The first inning started off shaky as Brandon Langston had bases loaded with no outs. He then went on to strike out the next batter and forced a double-play, which leads the conference with 32.
In the second inning our offense got started. Troy Mendez started it off with a single. Ryan Self put down a sacrifice bunt to move Mendez over into scoring position.
Tanner Moore got on base by an infield single. Ben Allen went down on strikes, but Mendez scored on a wild pitch. Justin Tramble was hit by a pitch then CJ Lee hit an RBI single. Anthony Russell ended the inning with a pop out.
To start the bottom half of the third, Justin Aughey hits his fifth home run of the season to make it 3-0. The Bucs kept the Bison at bay until the fifth inning. Then our three-run lead turned into a two run deficit.
Lipscomb started off with back to back singles. Then the next batter bunted his way on to load the bases. After that came back to back RBI singles, a walk and another single. Then finally Langston got three straight outs with a ground out back to him, and a double play.
After three runs the Bucs could not score anything even with people on base to make it look like we could come back. The Bison scored four more runs in the sixth inning to make it 9-3. Lipscomb put one more run across to make it 10-3 in the seventh.
“It’s disappointing. They just had extra at bats tonight. We made mistakes and they made good use of them. We haven’t played really good defense in a while. They put a big inning together and got good runs out of it,” Coach Tony Skole said.
