Dear Editor:
I just wanted to quickly respond to Jesse Ball’s letter. Jesse, I’m assuming that this is your first year at ETSU only because of your lack of knowledge about the facts involved with campus construction. For one, the “Carillon” was built with alumni money- not ETSU funds as you claim. Blame the Alumni Association for the incessant songs.
Also, the Culp Center has to be upgraded. It was built in the early 1970s and no longer meets state and federal fire and safety codes. Now, if this is your first year, surely you toured campus before you chose to come here. If you are a returning student, then you know that construction on campus has been going on for some time now. Either way, you knew what you were getting into. Yes, it is annoying, but since ETSU is growing, it has to accommodate that growth.
Lastly, I saw that you vaguely mentioned football. Students actually voted down bringing the program back this past spring. Many of those who voted against it because they wanted see money go toward updating the out-of-date, unsafe buildings (i.e. Ball Hall) around campus rather than thrown away on a debt-inducing football program.
However, I do agree with you on one thing. I feel that ETSU and all universities should strive toward greener thinking. Maybe you should look into joining the Initiative for Clean Energy (ICE) organization on campus.
