Mountain Movers Dance Company at East Tennessee State University invites dancers and dance students age 15 and over with intermediate level techniques to participate in a free modern dance master class with guest artist Erin Law this Friday, Nov. 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Room 104 on the east side of Memorial Center (Mini-Dome).
Although the class is free, reservations are required as enrollment is limited to 30 individuals and placement in the class is determined by the date and time reservations are received.
The class serves as the audition for a choreographic work set by Law.
Dancers selected for eligibility to perform the work must be available for intensive rehearsals this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3-4, and must attend Mountain Movers classes and rehearsals from now through February.
These are scheduled from 5-7 p.m. on Mondays and from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Saturdays. Prospects must also be available to perform Feb. 21-24.
Eligibility for performance is not required for dancers wishing to participate in the Nov. 2 class.
This program has received funds from the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Johnson City Area Arts Council through the Arts Build Communities grant program.
Law graduated with a B.A. degree and High Honors in Dance from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y., and received certification in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis from the Integrated Movement Studies (IMS) program at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Her mentors include Peggy Hackney, Janice Meaden and Ed Groff. She has taught Modern Technique and Bartenieff Fundamentals as a guest at various institutions in New York, Utah and Tennessee, including the Tennessee Association of Dance conferences, Off Vertical Movement Studios, the Hermitage Dance Academy, the Dance Studio and Franklin School of Performing Arts and the Ensworth School in Nashville.
She has been a guest teacher/choreographer at Nashville School of the Arts public arts magnet school for the past four years and continues to create works and develop the modern dance curriculum.
Law danced with the Nashville-based Shelter Repertory Dance Theatre under artistic director Kim Nofsinger, and, during the 2006-07 academic year, she was an artist in residence at Berea (Ky.) College.
She is now employed with Vanderbilt University’s Great Performances Series and Vanderbilt Dance Group, and she is engaged in several independent projects.
