These days everything is about technology, even when it comes to education. With laptop owners growing in number every day, and Internet access becoming a necessity in colleges and universities, it is time that ETSU upgrades its wireless network.
Previously the campus had very few hot spots, with the D.P. Culp Center being the main place students would go for wireless access.
Now ETSU is in the process of implementing a three-year plan to provide wireless Internet access from anywhere on the main campus, as well as the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center campus.
The plan has three phases, and the first has already been completed. An array of 40 outdoor wireless access points installed several places such as on campus streetlights.
Step two is underway, and that consists of all the indoor wireless spots being converted to Wi-Fi mesh units, which will help once phase three is completed, which will then unify the Wi-Fi network around campus by putting more points in buildings that have no wireless access now, such as Dossett Hall.
By doing this, the entire campus will be wireless, and there will be no more need to plug in for laptop users. It will also enable them to move about campus without interrupting their connection and having to reset it.
Convenient, logical and well-planned, the new Wi-Fi system is sure to be a great addition to this campus.
