The ETSU men’s basketball team extended their winning streak to five games on Super Bowl Sunday while at home against Kennesaw State University.
The crowd of 3,287 fans looked on as the Bucs handled the Owls 72-66, and improved their record to 13-9 overall, 7-3 Atlantic Sun action.
ETSU was lead by junior forward Kevin Tiggs (Flint, Michigan), who posted 18 points and eight rebounds in the contest, while senior guard Travis Strong (Memphis) picked up 13 points. Junior guard Courtney Pigram (Memphis) also posted double-digit points as he totaled 10 points.
Kennesaw State was led by senior forward Ronell Wooten who posted a game-high 28 points.
During the first half the Bucs stringent defense held the Owls to under 10 points for most of the first 10 minutes of the half.
Kennesaw caught a second wind with their over 50 percent 3-point shooting, giving the Owls a two-point lead over the Bucs at half time.
The 29 points in the first half was the lowest half score by the Bucs all season.
In the second half the Bucs showed more intensity on the offensive side of the ball as they improved their field goal percentage to over 50 percent. A questionable technical foul with 5:33 left in the game by Pigram gave the Owls a four-point swing and brought them back to within five points.
The Buccaneers dominated the paint and out-rebounded the Owls as well. This with the help of crucial free-throw conversions in the closing minutes sealed the fate for the Owls who fall to 6-16 overall, 3-5 in A-Sun action.
The Bucs will hit the road for their next couple games as they face Florida Gulf Coast on Friday in a conference battle at 7 p.m. Next Sunday afternoon the Bucs will be facing conference foe Stetson at 3 p.m. Both games can be viewed on A-Sun TV.
