The big game has passed and we finally have a new Super Bowl champion. For the hermits out there who live under a rock, the New England Patriots lost. No perfect season for the unstoppable Pats as another Manning took the MVP and the Lombardi as well.
This Manning was Eli, by the way, little brother to Peyton.
I believe that everyone was looking for the Super Bowl blowout as we have seen in past years, but this one was different.
The game was a defensive battle to say the least with the New York Giants defense putting continuous pressure on superstar Tom Broadly and eventually sacking him five times. Both defenses put on a spectacular show a made for a low-scoring game.
The real letdown for me was the halftime show. Tom Petty is a classic no doubt, but maybe too classic. Also the always-hyped commercials were a letdown. Especially the “GoDaddy.Com” ones, but I did change the channel to an eating contest at half time.
The last half of the Super Bowl, which was played at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona, became the breaking point for the New England faithful. The Giants had the ball with a little over two minutes left and down by four. Here the situation is clear; touchdown and win.
Peyton Manning must have remotely controlled his little brother as he ran a spectacular two-minute drill. I couldn’t tell the difference between either Peyton’s or Eli’s style of play as Eli bombed a 32-yard pass to David Tyree and then put the last nail in the Patriots coffin as he hit the corner of the end zone for a game-winning touchdown.
Any Patriots fan will tell you that it was a great comeback in Super Bowl history, but any Giants fan will tell you that it was the greatest missed opportunity in history.
Where do we go from here as a sports fan? The only thing I have left between now and next football season is basketball.
March Madness is just around the corner and things in the college basketball season are just heating up. Not just on the national level but here at ETSU as well.
The men’s basketball team is riding a five-game winning streak and is currently tied for second in the A-Sun conference behind Jacksonville.
The next six conference games and the tournament will ultimately decide if the Bucs are potentially NCAA tournament material.
In the more broader spectrum of college ball, the rankings have really shaken up in the past couple months. The last unbeaten team, Memphis, had its closest game of the year against University of Texas El Paso.
Duke and North Carolina sit at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, and Tennessee has a strong hold at No. 7.
Tennessee will get their chance at Memphis on Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. And by the time this article runs the outcome of the infamous Duke vs. Carolina game will be known.
In other college basketball news, the great head coach Bobby Knight resigned from his helm at Texas Tech.
Mostly known for his fiery temper and his coaching brilliance, he has racked up 902 wins in 42 years as a coach. This is the most among any one coach in Division I Men’s Basketball history. His son Pat will take over the reminder of the season for the Red Raiders.
Whatever sporting event you decided to take up after the Super Bowl, make sure it’s something that sparks your interest.
