Dear Editor,
In the Feb. 7 East Tennessean, you had a run-down on the beliefs of the presidential candidates.
I suppose many people pick a candidate based on their beliefs, but this seems strange to me.
I would much rather vote for a candidate who was honest, intelligent, and competent, whose beliefs I disagreed with, than for a candidate who shared all my beliefs, but was dishonest, foolish, and incompetent.
To find out whether a candidate is honest or not, read their financial statements online.
Most of the 2008 candidates have between one and ten million dollars in personal assets, primarily from book royalties and speaking engagements.
This is in contrast with current office holders. President George W. Bush has a personal fortune of about $30 million, most of it gifts from corporations or individuals.
Vice President Dick Cheney has a personal fortune of about $100 million, most of it gifts from corporations or individuals.
