“The deadline is March 1,” said executive aid Debbie Bays, “just stop in.” Stop in where? The scholarship office, of course, to fill out an application.
The office is located on the third floor of the D.P. Culp Center next to Main Meal.?One simple application that can be acquired at this office is needed in order to apply for at least 50 scholarships. The James H. Quillen Scholarship alone is a large amount of money available to ETSU students.
Kathy Feagins, director of the scholarship office, and her team try to let students know about the aid available.
“There is usually a sign in front of the office urging students to stop in and fill out an application, but with the construction going on in the Culp it is hard to notice,” said Bays, “There are about 1,200 applicants on average who apply for these scholarships.?Also if you are awarded a scholarship it is kept throughout the entire fall and spring semesters.” ??
Throughout February students are urged to file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) before applying for scholarships.
Scholarship requirements include a range of GPA scores from 2.0-4.0, ACT and SAT scores, which high school you graduated from, what county you graduated in, ETSU employee dependents and if you require assistance (information found by the office through your FASFA on the web).
All of these scholarships are in the 2008-2009 Scholarships pamphlet handed to you almost immediately after stepping foot in the office.
The best way to get a scholarship is to submit a FAFSA application as soon as possible or go to the scholarship office and get the application before March 1. It is important for graduate students to contact the heads of their major’s department or field of study in which they will soon be graduating from in order to learn about specific goal oriented scholarships for students.
There are departmental scholarships for the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Technology, the College of Education, the College of Nursing, and the College of Public and Allied Health. There are also a vast number of scholarships around ETSU that can be awarded to you by applying online or to specific businesses.
There are pamphlets, handouts and books, in addition to the extremely friendly and helpful employees of this office, which will inform you of every single scholarship or grant that you are eligible for and exactly how to get it.
These books include assistance for certain ethnicities, where you live or came from, also if you were ever in the armed forces.? Although the books are “hardly ever used” and probably a bit dusty, just think about the free money that waits inside their bindings. Free money is a fantastic reason to read a book. All of these and more are at the same office, the scholarship office.? It is one quick and easy stop.? After you eat or while you are roaming around between classes you should stop in, fill out an application and get the help you need.
