“The Impact of Indoor Air Pollution on Human Health in the Developing World” will be the topic of a free public lecture at ETSU on Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Ball Hall auditorium.
Dr. William Martin, Director of Translational Research for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), will deliver the keynote address which is part of the “Leading Voices in Public Health” Lecture Series in the ETSU College of Public Health.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), indoor air pollution has been estimated to cause more than 1.5 million deaths per year around the world, primarily among women and children. Indoor fires for heating and cooking are primary causes of indoor air pollution. According to WHO, “In high-mortality developing countries, indoor smoke is responsible for an estimated 3.7 percent of the overall disease burden, making it the most lethal killer after malnutrition, unsafe sex, and lack of safe water and sanitation.”
Martin is an internationally recognized expert in asthma, lung disease, and environmental impacts on human health. Before joining NIEHS, he served as dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and was President of the American Thoracic Society. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in addition to numerous abstracts. For the past 18 years, Martin has been featured in the Best Doctorsr listing. He also has expertise in working at the interface of medicine and public health both nationally and internationally.
