Dear Editor,
I would like to thank President Stanton for his courageous decision to ban smoking on campus. This had to be a tough decision. I’m a former smoker so I know the addiction well.
I also know the detrimental health effects as I now have asthma because of smoking.
I cannot tolerate the smoke and appreciate that I will be able to walk on campus and not have to watch carefully for smokers so I can avoid noxious clouds.
People have the legal right to smoke but not to inflict the fumes on others. There have been people saying that smoking areas should be placed and smokers should use them. The problem is that smokers already ignore no smoking signs and smoke in doorways and on ramps.
There is supposed to be a 50-foot, smoke-free area at doorways. The ash stands are closer than 50 feet from the doors. This is true at Sam Wilson Hall at the front steps and ramp.
The ash stand is right at the foot of the steps and smokers congregate right around it, on the steps, and on the ramp.
Again, thanks for the ban.
