Among the array of classes offered during ESU’s second summer session (July 7-Aug. 8) will be two courses concerning the Appalachian region.
“Coal Mining in Appalachia” will focus on the history of coal mining, including its economic, environmental, and social impact on local communities, the Appalachian region, the nation, and the world. The class will investigate the relatively recent practice of mountaintop removal surface mining in the region, and will also explore the artistic responses to coal mining by authors, musicians, and filmmakers. Significant books, documentary films and sound recordings, and still photography will be discussed, and an optional field trip to a mining museum is planned.
The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-9:15 p.m. and is listed in the summer course bulletin as APST 4956/5956, HIST 4956/5956, or SOAA 4956/5956.
“War and Appalachia” will explore the history of war in the region from the earliest days of European settlement on the frontier to the present day. The class will study battles of major wars partly fought in the region and will illuminate the impact of wars fought within the region and across the world on Appalachia and on Appalachian society. Incorporating the perspectives of many disciplines (history, social sciences, folklore, music, literature, and film), the course will use readings, recordings, videos, and still photography, and will feature an optional field trip to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
The class, listed as APST 4956/5956 or HIST 4956/5956, will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 12:45 p.m.
Both courses will be taught by Dr. Ted Olson, an associate professor in ETSU’s Center for Appalachian Studies and Services. Current ETSU students and members of the wider community are invited to register for these classes. Those individuals not currently enrolled but wishing to take one of the courses should call the ETSU Office of Admissions at 439-4213 for an application to be admitted as a special student.
