East Tennessee State University has entered into an exchange agreement with Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan, and Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea.
Ryukoku University was founded in 1639 as a school for Buddhist monks and became a university in 1876. Ryukoku enrolls some 20,000 students, about 500 of whom are from other countries.
The city of Kyoto, located in the central part of the island of Honshu, has a population of 1.5 million. Known for ancient shrines, temples and a castle built by shoguns, Kyoto is a popular tourist destination. The city is the home of Japan’s television and film industries and many electronics corporations.
Ewha Womans University in Seoul is the world’s largest women’s university, with a population of some 19,500 students. The school was founded in 1886 by Methodist Episcopal missionary Mary F. Scranton and retains the 19th century term “womans” in its official name.
Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is one of the largest cities in the world and boasts a population of 10 million.
